My Yeast Infection Got Worse: Recurring Problems

You had your first yeast infection when you were sixteen. Lately, though, it seems they are becoming more and more frequent and it is starting to make you wonder why it is that your yeast infections are getting worse. There are a variety of reasons for this including birth control pills, changes in diet, diabetes, immune compromise and even certain parasites.

What Should I do About the Problem?

As is the case with all medical issues, the first step is to seek professional help. The reason that your yeast infections are getting worse with regard to frequency must be determined so that a proper treatment regimen may be followed. This is particularly true for women who are living with a compromised immune system, undiagnosed or untreated diabetes or a parasite.

Immune compromised patients, such as those with H.I.V. are the most likely to have problems with yeast infections getting worse. This is because candida is an opportunistic fungus that becomes a pathogen when the natural bacteria that keep it in check are compromised. The same is also true for women with undiagnosed diabetes due to the changes in blood sugar and parasites that can attack the immune system.

What if I Find Out That it Is not Some Illness?

After seeking medical help and you discover that you are one of millions of women who suffer chronic yeast infections without some underlying immune system or other issue, there are proactive steps to help prevent your recurring bouts with yeast infections from getting worse. The first step is to watch your diet. Yeasts love sugar, so deny them the pleasure of refined sugars, vinegars and alcohols.

Next, if you are taking the pill as a form of birth control, consider switching to another method, at least temporarily, to determine whether that may be the underlying cause. Also, avoid taking antibiotics unless absolutely necessary and take acidophilus, a bacteria known for keeping candida down, to reduce the potential for your yeast infections to get worse.

Finally, watch what you are wearing. Avoid clothing in the genital area that is too tight or that does not allow for the transfer of air. Cotton is best, because it is breathable and helps to maintain dryness and does not trap heat the way that nylon and lycra can. Also, pantyhose should never be worn without cotton underwear, and stockings may be considered as an alternative for even more air circulation.

By seeking proper medical advice, watching what you are eating, switching forms of birth control and carefully choosing undergarments, it may be possible to prevent further problems with your yeast infections getting worse.
